Charitable Status for Faith Groups Under Threat
Across Canada, religious organizations provide more than just places of worship. They offer food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless, hope to the hopeless. They are the hands and feet of compassion in every province, in every community.
The Canadian government is considering a plan to revoke the charitable status of religious organizations—starting with those identified as “anti-abortion,” and potentially extending to all faith-based charities.
The Standing Committee on Finance’s report issued in December, 2024 includes 462 recommendations aimed at reforming various aspects of Canada’s fiscal policy. Among these recommendations are clauses 429 and 430, which specifically target religious organizations involved in anti-abortion advocacy. Clause 429 proposes revoking charitable status for organizations that promote anti-abortion views, while clause 430 extends this revocation to all religious organizations regardless of their specific focus.
