In 2016, Ms. Emanuel was a student on the Ryerson campus, now Toronto Metropolitan University. She brought a case against her university after she was allegedly prohibited from receiving racial, disability and equity services for females, including services for those who have been sexually assaulted, because she shared the “wrong” beliefs on campus.
Emanuel, a survivor of sexual trauma, is a woman of colour with a medical disability. Her case alleges that a campus offering “equity services” has discriminated against the recipient of those services on the basis of creed.
